WaKeeney Speedway hosted their inaugural Battle for the Belt event this weekend, persistent rain and cold temperatures kept practice night from happening on Thursday. But Friday and Saturday featured amazing racing action from the five IMCA classes. Friday had some character to the track as the surface was not in ideal conditions after the rainfall, the drivers pushed through and put a show on for the fans! One hundred forty-one race teams checked in for the first night on Friday. Visiting victory lane were Jordan Grabouski in the stock car after a thrilling battle with David Murray Jr. Dillon Richards won in the hobby stock, leading a top-five of Nebraska drivers! Clay Money picked up his fortieth career win in his second to last Kansas IMCA start! Brandon Spanjer held off a hungry sport mod field. Kiowa Higdon was able to survive the IMCA sport compact field.
Grabo Outlasts Murray in Stock Car Thriller!
The "Class Too Tough to Tame" started the night off on Friday, with five heat races! David Murray Jr, Tathan Burkhart, Easton LaRiviere, Jordan Grabouski, and Angel Munoz all grabbed heat race wins, while Kyle Pfeifer and Quinton Yutterman grabbed B-Main wins.
Angel Munoz and Tathan Burkhart brought the field to green in their twenty lap a-main, the bottom prevailed for the first two corners, for Munoz, and then Tathan got the top side to grab the lead on lap one through turns three and four. Lap two saw David Murray take the lead using a three wide move, with Grabouski flying through the middle groove. Lap three saw Murray hold the lead, while Brendyn Nordyke came to a stop and a piece of lead dropped in turn one to bring out a caution. Grabouski started challenging Murray on lap four using a good run on the top in turns three and four, while the bottom and middle groove prevailed in one and two. Lap seven saw Grabouski throw a slider in turns three and four and Murray was unable to cross back over. The halfway point saw Grabouski still hold the lead over Murray, who held a solid advantage over Angel Munoz in third. Caution came out on lap twelve as Kyle Pfeifer and Cleo Adams took spins in turn three and four. Grabouski led the field to a restart, Trevor Schmidt and Cleo Adams collided heavily down the frontstretch, resulting in two badly damaged cars, luckily both drivers were able to walk away. Grabouski led the field to a restart, and a three car battle for the lead broke out between him, Munoz and Murray, caution came out with six laps remaining as Dylan Bell was high centered in turn two. Grabouski restarted the field and used the bottom groove to hold the lead, as Jeremy Zorn had a problem down the backstretch. Grabouski would bring the field to another restart, and used the middle groove to try and hold the lead, despite Murray trying to get by on the bottom, and Munoz up top. With four laps to go Grabouski held a lead by just two one thousandths of a second. The trio continued to put on a show in the closing laps with Grabouski moving up top to hold off Munoz. Jordan Grabouski made the top groove work the best to pick up the win. Second went to David Murray Jr, third was Angel Munoz, fourth was Tyler Frye, and fifth was Troy Burkhart. Hard charger in the event was Tyler Frye who gained twelve spots, other nice runs included Kyle Pfeifer up nine spots after that lap twelve spin, while Jason Rogers and Jayce Reimer gained eight spots each, Eric Munoz gained seven spots, and Troy Burkhart gained five spots!

Spanjer Holds Off Hungry Sport Mod Field!
The sport mods ran second on the program, they ran four heat races! Blaine Walt, Douglas Beaman, Josh Barnhart and "Stone Cold" Kam Gruber all grabbed heat race wins, while Chad Dolan won the B-Main.
Collyer's Blaine Walt led Munjor's Kam Gruber to the start of the twenty lap sport mod A-Main, Walt used the bottom groove to get the early jump on Gruber, and led by a couple of car lengths at the line on lap one. Lap two saw Brandon Spanjer and Josh Barnhart start pressuring Gruber for second. Caution came out as Barnhart spun by himself in turn one, and collected Nick Hankins and Colton Czpanskiy who had nowhere to go. The heavy contact from Hankins resulted in a DNF for Barnhart. Walt restarted the field from the top groove and quickly Spanjer threw a slider in one and two. Walt crossed back over down the backstretch, and Cody Williams found his way into the battle. Caution came out as Josiah Lopez and Brady Skrdlant had problems in one and two, ending Lopez's night, Skrdlant was able to continue. Walt and Spanjer battled side by side off the restart, not wanting to give each other an inch. Lap nine saw the field slow to a caution as Dylan Bell spun in turn two. Walt would lead the field to another restart, Spanjer got a good restart, but Walt had enough momentum to hold off half of a lap, before Spanjer took the lead out of turn four. Lap eleven saw Walt attempt a slider but the duo was stuck side by side, lap twelve saw Walt retake the race lead. Lap thirteen saw Spanjer use the bottom groove to take the lead away, but Spanjer would use the top side to hold off a charge from Walt. Three laps to go saw Spanjer pull away with the lead, while Watts was using the bottom groove to make a late run. Brandon Spanjer grabbed the race win, second went to Cody Williams, third was Tyler Watts, Blaine Walt fell back to fourth, and Zane Woodman grabbed fifth place. Hard charger in the event was Zane Woodman who grabbed nine spots, other nice runs included Chad Dolan up eight spots after prevailing with the win in the b-main, Cameron Hammett also gained eight spots. Tyler Watts, Jim Bell, and Brady Skrdlant all gained seven spots each.

Money Picks Up Fortieth Career Mod Win!
The modifieds ran third on the program, they ran three heat races! Greg Gustus, Tanner Black and Clay Money all grabbed heat race wins, while Ayden Steffens won the B-Main.
Colorado and Kansas faced off to start the twenty lap modified feature, as Hudson's Greg Gustus was on the pole from the inside row, and Penokee's Clay Money started from the outside row. Money was making his second to last career start in the state of Kansas. The top side worked well for the Money-Man as he took the early lead, with heavy hitters Jordan Grabouski, Tanner Black and Brett Berry were moving to the front immediately, in a loaded modified field. Money pulled away in the early laps from Tanner Black who settled into the top groove in second place. Money held almost a two second lead on lap five. Meanwhile, Black had his hands full with Grabouski. Caution came out on lap six as Danny Keller had an issue, and the field would undergo a restart with Money in control. A few laps later Black pulled the lead away on the bottom groove to lead lap ten. Money kept it wound up on the top groove to keep Black honest. The leaders entered lapped traffic in the closing laps, allowing Brett Berry to close in on the lead battle. Berry grabbed third place on lap eighteen just before Clay Sellard went for a spin, a restart would ensue, and boy were the fans in for a show. Brett Berry chose the bottom on the restart, and Money got a great launch off the top side and was side by side with Black for the lead at the line. Lap nineteen saw Money try all he had up top and saw him rocket to the race win at the line! Clay Money grabbed career win number forty! Tanner Black finished second, Brett Berry third, Jordan Grabouski fourth, and Eddie Belec fifth. Hard charger was Ryan Richmeier who gained ten spots. Other nice runs included Dewain Coleman up eight spots, John Burrow up seven spots, while Dylan Sherfick and Austin Caruthers gained six spots each.

Higdon Survives Compact Battle!
The compacts ran fourth on the program, they ran two heat races. Brothers Connor and Jake Schwien were able to grab heat race wins.
Their fifteen-lap main event started with a front row of Connor Schwien and Kiowa Higdon, Alex Boyden immediately jumped to the bottom to give the fans a three wide battle for the lead, with Higdon barely holding the lead at the line. Higdon led lap two that saw Kyle Mortensen sneak into third place. Higdon and Schwien battled closely throughout the event, as the duo could never really run away from each other. At the halfway point, Gage Porter was battling for third, and took it away from Mortensen. Connor Schwien found some momentum using the top groove late in the feature, and the added pressure allowed Porter to close in. Schwien started falling back, allowing Higdon and Porter to battle for the lead. Porter tried to throw a slider with two laps to go, but Higdon crossed him back. Kiowa Higdon held on to pick up the win, second went to Gage Porter, third to Connor Schwien, fourth was Alex Boyden and fifth was Kaishen Brack. Hard charger was Gage Porter who gained three spots.

Richards Bests Nebraskan Top-Five Hobby Field!
The hobby stocks closed out the program on Friday, they ran three heat races! Brayden Hurley, Dillon Richards and Trent Matson all grabbed heat race wins, while Ted Trumbo won the b-main.
Their twenty-lap main event featured a front row of Trent Matson and Brayden Hurley. Matson grabbed the early race lead using the top groove and led lap one. Lap two saw Dillon Richards and Brayden Hurley start battling side by side for the lead. Lap three saw Richards dive to the inside of Matson for the race lead, but Matson held strong. Lap four saw the inside prevail for Richards. Caution came out as James Phelps and Cole Schulte spinning in turn two. Richards brought the field to a restart, and started pulling away from Matson and Hurley by two car lengths. At the halfway point Richards still held total control over the field. Caution came out for debris in turn three, with six laps to go. Richards led the remainder, despite a slider attempt from Matson, that bunched the trio up. Dillon Richards grabbed the win, Brayden Hurley barely nipped Matson for second. Matson third, Dillon Thompson fourth and Eric Chab fifth. Hard charger was Justin Yutterman up nine spots, while Brandon Wise had a nice run gaining seven spots.

The field returned for added money on Saturday night, to close out the inaugural Battle for the Belt.
